Palataki

Limenaria Sightseeing

Above the port of Limenaria, on top of a hill, stands the imposing “Palataki” (small palace), which seems as if taken out of a fairytale. It is a building designed by the world-renowned Italian architect Arigoni, in the early 20th century and was used as the headquarters of the German company Speidel, that was operating the mines at the time. In its courtyard, which is surrounded by a pine forest, there is a small chapel and dispersed sculptures of the Thassian sculptor Lovoulos. The state has included it in the ‘Monument of Modern Times’ and a preserved piece of art requiring special protection.

Limenaria Sightseeing

This is the area where the remains of the mining establishments of Limenaria contrast with the blue of the sea and constitute a great reason for exploring the area. South of “Palataki”, office headquarters of the German company Speidel that was managing the mines, at a bay called “Metalleia” (Mines), spread out on a steep slope are the half-demolished buildings of the metal processing installations. In front of them and to the north one can distinguish the well-preserved furnaces used for metal-making and to the south an artificial hill of slag, which splits the beach into two halves.

In the museum of Limenaria is exhibited a collection of folk art. It was created in 1993 by members of the cultural association of Limenaria called ‘Kastro’ (Castle). It is housed in an old building of the community, in the village center. The purpose of the collection is the promotion of the local tradition. More specifically, household utensils, clothing and a loom are exhibited. In another section, one can observe tools of traditional professions and a traditional distillery of ‘tsipouro’ (traditional Greek spirits). Of particular interest are the tools used in the first period of operation of the local mines.

All the main beaches of Thassos are supplied with floating platforms where professional instructors will initiate you into water-skiing, jet-skiing, paragliding or wind surfing. There are also several highly professional scuba diving clubs all over the island both for beginners and experienced divers.

In a place famed since ancient times for the maritime skills of its inhabitants, you can find a yacht marina in Limenaria or Potos and a multitude of good moorings in the vicinity of the coast. A unique feeling can be offered by renting boats or yachts. You can rent a boat and enjoy the beautiful Aegean Sea and visit some of the isolated beaches, which cannot be accessed in any other way.

Nightlife in Thassos is mostly concentrated in the areas of Limenaria, Potos & Limenas. There you can find several nice bars & clubs filled with a vibrant atmosphere that serve alcohol and delicious coctails till the early hours.

For a calmer night out, enjoy a long dinner in one of the many restaurants & taverns. It’s not uncommon for several establishments to organize “Greek nights” at least once every week where you can join the locals and dance in the rhythm of live Greek music. It is highly recommended that you attend such an event at least once!
